Quail Creek 2010 Summer Fitness Challenge

We’re EAGER to get to EAGAR

The Quail Creek Sports Committee is sponsoring a three-month fitness challenge beginning on the first day of summer, June 21 and ending on September 20, 2010.  During the challenge participants will earn “map miles” by doing a variety of exercise both within the Sports Center and outside of the Sports Center.  They will travel from Quail Creek to Four Corners, New Mexico, passing through Eagar, Arizona, along the way. How will this work?

Come to the fitness center anytime between Monday, June 14th and June 20 to fill out a registration form for the challenge.  Give yourself a neat nickname that we’ll use in public displays of progress.

From June 21 through September 20, keep track of the amount of exercise you do each week, using forms that the Sports Committee has prepared.  This year, we’re tracking all kinds of activities:  group exercise classes, outside cycling and hiking/walking, tennis, lap swimming, water aerobics, weight lifting, and aerobic machines in the Sports Center.  You’ll be asked to translate your exercise to “map miles” (using the easy formulae that we will give you) and record your weekly “map miles” (using your nickname) in the notebook at the Sports Center front desk.  For aerobics equipment in the Sports Center, you’ll use the distance shown on the machine.  For other activities, we’ve translated hours of activity into “map miles,” roughly based on calorie equivalents.

Every week, the Sports Committee will post cumulative results in chart form, giving you the ability to see your progress.  To make this a fun event, we’ll track your progress in mileage from Quail Creek to the final destination goal, Four Corners, New Mexico (which is 547 miles from QC).  There will be a map of the route and information about all the towns and areas of interest to read about as you accomplish your destination goal!

At the end of the challenge, t-shirts will be given out to everyone who has made it to Eagar, Arizona, which is about halfway to Four Corners (about 290 miles).

The Sports Committee hopes everyone will have a fun summer here at Quail Creek and spend time working out regularly.  Join us in being “Eager to get to Eagar.”

And just a reminder:

  • Don’t forget to bring your ID to the Sports Center. New IDs can be attained from an attendant.
  • Bring a friend to work out with, especially during non-attendant hours.
  • Please take a shower before entering the pools. We know it can be brisk, but it reduces body/hair oils that end up clogging filters and is good for our health!
  • Remember to wear non-street shoes in the group exercise room – this will help the floor last longer.
  • Use the stretching/wellness room even when other activities such as chair massage are going on.
  • Try to keep the three movable fans in the fitness equipment room on “oscillation” mode. This will keep air moving throughout a given area. If needed, ask attendants for assistance.
